The 5A Freshwater Pearl Grading Guide

Table of Contents

In modern pearl trading and e-commerce, the 5A Scale (AAAAA to A) is the most widely used system. It expands upon traditional grading by pushing the boundaries of the absolute top-tier pearls, allowing buyers to identify flawless museum-grade gems.

 The 5A Grading Matrix

Grade

Luster (The Shine)

Surface Clarity

Shape

Market Position

 AAAAA (5A)

Metallic / Mirror

Extremely sharp, mirror-like reflection.

100% Flawless

Investment/Heirloom

Extremely rare; used in top-tier statement pieces.

AAAA (4A)

Excellent

Bright and sharp reflection with vivid overtones.

95%+ Clean

Virtually blemish-free; tiny pinpricks invisible when worn.

Round / Near-Round

Appears perfectly round to the eye.

High Jewelry

The gold standard for luxury strands and bridal jewelry.

AAA (3A)

Very Good

Strong, bright shine but reflections are slightly soft.

90% Clean

1 or 2 minor blemishes hidden near the drill hole.

Near-Round

Looks round when worn but slightly off-spherical.

Premium Commercial

The most popular grade in high-end department stores.

AA (2A)

Good

Noticeable shine, but lacks deep crispness; a bit milky.

75% Clean

Minor wrinkles, pits, or rings visible under close inspection.

Semi-Round / Oval

Noticeably oval or slightly flattened.

Casual Wear

Perfect for multi-strand necklaces and everyday bracelets.

A (1A)

Fair / Poor

Dull, chalky surface with very little light return.

Below 50% Clean

Heavy blemishes, deep pits, or severe rings.

Baroque / Irregular

Asymmetrical or heavily distorted shapes.

Craft / Budget

Used for fast-fashion jewelry or souvenir pieces.

Smart Shopping Tip: Spotting a Fake "5A" Label

Because the 5A system is a commercial standard rather than a rigidly regulated lab certification (like GIA diamonds), some sellers artificially inflate their grades.

THE 3-STEP REALITY CHECK

When buying online or in-store, test the "5A" claim yourself:

 1. The Phone Test: Can you see the reflection of your phone's camera lens

sharply on the pearl's surface? If yes, it's true 4A/5A luster.

 2. The Roll Test: Roll the pearl on a flat surface. Does it roll in a

perfectly straight line without wobbling? If it wobbles, it's not 5A round.

 3. The 360° Spin: Spin the pearl under bright light. Are there more than

two pinpoint imperfections? If yes, it's likely a 3A or 2A masquerading as a 5A.

The Verdict: True AAAAA freshwater pearls (especially large-nucleated Edison pearls) are an extreme rarity. For the best balance of beauty and budget, look for AAAA luster and AAA shape to get the best value for your money.
